Portomarín
Portomarín is famous for its stunning natural beauty, boasting well-maintained green spaces that have earned it the nickname "Garden Village." Parks such as Manuel de Blas, Antonio Sanz, and Agustín del Río contribute to its charm, making it the urban center with the largest area of green spaces.
However, Portomarín's story is defined by two distinct eras and the Belesar Reservoir. In the 1960s, the construction of the reservoir submerged the town's history, requiring the careful relocation of key buildings to a higher elevation while preserving the village’s essence. Today’s Portomarín closely resembles its predecessor, as some buildings were meticulously moved stone by stone, rewriting the destiny of this important stop on the French Route to Compostela.
Though many structures were saved, some smaller buildings and riverside mills were lost, now hidden beneath the water. Portomarín offers a captivating combination of visible beauty and submerged treasures that hold a rich history waiting to be discovered.
