Camponaraya

Camponaraya 640x430
Camponaraya, in the heart of the Bierzo region, has an undeniable tradition of the Way of St. James. From its flag and coat of arms, where the scallop shell is the protagonist, to its strategic location on the route of the French Way, make it an important stop for walkers and pilgrims on their way to Compostela. Surrounded by vineyards and in a privileged setting, it is the starting point for more and more tourists on their way to Santiago.

This town is set in an idyllic spot, some 60 kilometres long, surrounded by mountains. This special geography makes the nature here unique and the tranquillity to which it is accustomed makes it a truly attractive place.

Until the 15th century, this land was made up of two distinct nuclei: Campo and Naraya, separated by the river that shares its name with the latter. Since their merger, it has been mentioned in many documents as an important stopping place on the Way of Saint James.

It was precisely in the Middle Ages when two hospitals were built: the Hospital de la Soledad and the Hospital de San Juan de Jaberos, to care for the pilgrims who were already on their way to Compostela and a hostel for walkers, which meant, as in many other places on this route, the growth of the area.

In addition to the route of the French Way, the main of the variants in honour of the Apostle, other variants not so well known or travelled converge in this town, which place Camponaraya on the map of pilgrimages and make it a place of reference.
