Mota chapel

Capela da Mota
In an isolated place to the northwest of the municipality of Arzúa, in a leafy oak grove, is the hermitage of La Mota.
The place of La Mota (stone) was a place of worship for the ancient inhabitants, Christianised at the time with the dedication of three apostles: Saint Matthew, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Simon.

Two important country pilgrimages are held here on the days of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Matthew.
Next to the oak grove runs a variant of the Northern Way that leads from Ribadeo to Compostela. This humble chapel was mentioned in 1790 by Jean Pierre Racq, a pilgrim from Bruges who was heading to Compostela after visiting San Salvador de Oviedo. It was also mentioned by the geographer Domingo Fontán in his study of the itinerary between Santiago and Ribadeo in the second half of the 19th century. The return route that pilgrims made in the Middle Ages from Santiago to San Salvador de Oviedo passed through this place.

As an old song says:
"Whoever visits Santiago and not the Savior serves the servant and ignores the Lord".

According to tradition, the oak grove arose from the belief that those young men who planted an oak there, if it grew, would be freed from their duties with the military.
