Castillo de Villafranca

Castillo
The imposing Castle of the Marquises of Villafranca offers a spectacular view of the area, especially on cloudy days.

It features strong walls, circular towers at the corners, and barred windows. The current castle, which is privately owned and not open to the public, was built on top of an earlier fortress called la Fuerza, with permission from Juana I of Castile.

Later expansions gave it an Italianate style, evident in its circular towers with slate roofs. The castle was looted by the English during their retreat to Lugo in the French invasion, and later set on fire by French troops.
