Antigas ferrerías (Las Herrerías)

vega
The village of Las Herrerías, through which the Camino de Santiago passes, owes its name to the presence of four ancient forges where iron and other metals from nearby mountains were worked. f

In this location, one of these forges can still be seen. Situated on a large plot of land next to the Valcarce river, are the buildings known as Las Herrerías. This two-story complex, built with rubble masonry and a three-sided roof, houses both residences and the old forge. On the second floor, there is a mill and a residence that is still in use today. This section is more recent than the original structure.

The mill is still operational, preserving all its machinery, which replaced the old hydraulic system.

Next to the forges, there was a large pit where lime was extracted, contributing to its importance as a commercial hub in its time. It is also believed that this was the location of the famous portádego de Valcarce, a tax that was collected here, which directly links to the village’s name.
