La Magdalena´s monastery
Founded around 1200 by Italian friars to aid pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, this monastery is one of Sarria's most iconic landmarks.
The Order of the Penitents of the Blessed Martyrs of Christ, known as "The Magdalenians," played a major role in caring for pilgrims until 1568. Since 1896, the Order of Mercy has occupied the monastery.
The complex preserves architectural elements from three distinct phases: a Romanesque church from the 13th century, with a doorway in the cloister and an arch in the Chapel of Santo Cristo; a Gothic church from the 15th and 16th centuries, whose main portal is now sealed; and a late Gothic church that features the Chapel Mayor with elaborate niches.
