San Xoán of Hospital da Condesa´s church

hospital
The name *Hospital da Condesa* refers to an old hospital in the area, one of the most well-known and ancient on the French Route, founded by Doña Egilo, the wife of Count Garzón, recognized for repopulating El Bierzo in the 9th century.

This hospital provided refuge to the weary pilgrims arriving in Galicia after crossing O Cebreiro.
Around this hospital and the Church of San Xoán, a small settlement developed. By the 16th century, the area was referred to as "hospital de la Comtesse." The church, originally under the O Cebreiro monastery, was the main parish until 1891 but always belonged to the archpriesthood of Triacastela.
The settlement grew around the hospital and its church, linked to the Order of Saint John or the Order of Malta. The church, like others in the region, features a simple Romanesque style, with masonry walls and a tower accessible by an external staircase. It has a nave with a Latin cross layout, a presbytery with a triumphal arch, and a semi-circular vault.
